Parliament To Tighten Control Over Implementation Of Plan For Broadening Cooperation With Turkey.

The Parliament of Ukraine intends to tighten control over implementation of the Joint Action Plan on Enhanced Co-operation between Ukraine and the Republic of Turkey. Viktoria Shvedova, the Head of the Press Service of the Parliament, announced this to journalists at the end of the meeting between Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Lytvyn said that the Parliament is interested in acceleration of Ukrainian-Turkish cooperation in general, and inter-parliamentary cooperation, in particular. The two sides agreed to step up cooperation within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as well as within the regional organizations of the countries in the Black Sea basin. Erdogan expressed Turkey's support for Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic and European-integration aspirations.

Kyiv Opens Ankara Square.

Kyiv's Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the Ankara Square in the Desnianskyi district of Kyiv. "The fact that a square named after the city of Ankara has been opened in Kyiv is of extreme significance to the deepening of our friendship," Erdogan said at the opening ceremony. A symbolic stone is installed at the center of the square. "The opening of the square is symbolic because we started building the Podil Bridge a few months ago," Omelchenko said. According to him, Kyiv and Ankara signed a Memorandum on Co-operation as far back as 1992. The square is located at the intersection of Maiakovsky Avenue and Saburov Street. Kyiv Municipal Administration announced in February that it intended to reach agreement with Turkey's Enerji Yapi A.S. by April on investment in and construction of the Podilsko-Voskresenskyi Bridge.
